Coloring Tips!
Welcome to the fun part — it’s time to paint your piece!
Our paints are specially made for pottery and will transform beautifully after they’re fired and glazed. Before you start, grab your sponge, take your time, and let’s go step-by-step.
What to Know Before You Paint
These paints are made specifically for pottery — not acrylics or general craft paint.
After firing and glazing, the colors will become brighter, clearer, and more vivid.
Your pottery piece is already white — if you want an area to stay white, just don’t paint it.
Step-by-Step: How to Paint Your Piece
1. Get Set Up
Find a clean, flat surface to work on.
Wipe your piece with the damp sponge included in the box to remove any dust before painting.
Keep your sponge, brushes, and paints nearby and ready to use.
2. Mix Your Paint
The paints are ready to use as they are — no need to add water.
Before using, mix them well with a stick or the back of your brush (especially if the color looks separated).
Shaking is okay, but mixing works better for the small containers.
3. Start Painting
Start with one thin coat of paint.
If you want stronger color, you can add one more light coat — but no more than two.
Too many layers will affect the glaze and might make it look bubbly or uneven after firing. If you want to layer more gently, dilute the paint with a bit of water to keep the surface light.
4. Mixing Colors
Feel free to mix paints on the palette included in your box to create custom shades.
Avoid mixing colors inside the jars.
Clean your brush before switching colors to keep your mixes fresh.
5. Where (Not) to Paint
You can paint anywhere you like — the inside, outside, handle — it’s up to you.
Just don’t paint the unglazed bottom ring of your piece.
That part touches the kiln shelf and must stay clean to avoid sticking.
6. Fixing Mistakes
Changed your mind? No worries.
Use the damp sponge to gently wipe the area and try again.
Darker colors like black may leave a light stain.
If that happens, you can either paint over it or wipe it a few times to fade it down.
Final Notes Before Sending It Back
Let your piece dry completely before wrapping it to send back to us for glazing and firing.
Once it’s ready, we’ll glaze it, fire it in the kiln, and send it back to you in the same box.
Tip: Wrap your painted piece carefully using the original wrapping materials, and place it gently in the box to avoid chipping or damage during the return.
Pro Tips
Don’t overload your brush — thin, even coats give the best glaze results.
Swirl your brush in water to clean it between colors, then dry before dipping into a new one.
Your design is now ready to be transformed in the kiln.
Once glazed and fired, your pottery will come to life — full of color and shine. We can’t wait to see what you’ve created. Don’t forget to tag us if you share it online.
